Young people in Teignbridge will for the first time, have their chance to take part in a district wide talent contest run along similar lines to Search for a Star and the popular TV programmes Pop idol, Fame Academy and X Factor. Unlike other local competitions Carnival Idol will only be open to 11 – 16 year olds and aims to nuture young talent by giving all budding young performers who live in the district an opportunity to showcase their talents and experience what it would be like to perform live on stage.

The contest is being run by Dawlish Carnival Committee and the final is due to run on Wednesday 15th August at the Shaftesbury Theatre in Dawlish during the town’s carnival week in partnership with the Shaftesbury Quest. Finalists will also perform as a group at the Dawlish Youth Proms on Saturday 30th June.

The contest will be open to anybody aged 11 to 16 years. Those who make through the first audition will face a second audition where 10 finalists will be selected to perform on stage as a group that evening as part of the Dawlish Youth Proms. The competition finals, however, will take place at the Shaftesbury Theatre to a live audience on the 15th August. They will battle it out to win the vote of the audience and the judges to be chosen as the 2007 Carnival Idol, the winner will also receive £100 in prize money. Their winning performance will also be recorded on to a CD and presented to them as a memento; there are also other opportunities for the winner in the pipeline.

Anyone wishing to enter must attend the first open audition to be held at the Blackdown Community centre near Dawlish Town FC, Sandy Lane, Dawlish. It is being held on Saturday 9th June from 10am to 5.30pm. Registration times are 9.30am for surnames starting A – L and 12pm, noon for surnames starting M – Z. Auditonees will be expected to sing a song of their choice in front of the three judges without a backing track.
