The future of Britain’s most famous black swans is under threat after a string of dog attacks left just one breeding pair.

There are now only four remaining adult swans but because they mate for life it is difficult to pair the two males whose female partners have been killed by dogs. Eggs have been saved and are being hand-reared in an attempt to save the group. One of the surviving males was injured trying to protect his partner and their eggs from the dog.

How many swans and other wildfowl have been injured / killed by dogs over the last 20 years on The Lawn/Brook?

It seems every few years the black swan population gets destroyed by dogs, foxes and dare I say it - possibly the odd retarded human.

IN MY OPINION, it seems that the dog's on leads signs are not working any better than the other 'DO NOT' signs spread all over Dawlish.

What is the Dawlish council doing about it, not a lot I expect.

So you are saying that people with diminished mental capabilities are partially responsible for the demise of the swans? Wow, that's a sweeping statement! I ask you kindly to apologise to everyone who had the misfortune to read that.  Thank you

I phoned the Police a few nights ago at 0100 as there were 12 under 16 year olds physically in the Brook at Jubilee Bridge chasing Swans by the time the Police arrived they were at the Bandstand smashing beer bottles i think DEEDOODLE may be right. I will add when the Police arrived they all scattered in different directions.

What on earth were youngsters doing out at that hour, do their parents know where their are.

I thought most would be at home this time of year revising for their GCSE  EXAMS.

Mispent youth. They are everywhere but adults ignore them until something serious happens - to late then.

And to answer Ziggy, the parents are probably pissed and don't care.

@majorp - totally agree with you. when you have had 4 generations of people go through the education system in this country and  have had zero discipline, although any teacher who dares to stand up to these ferals is swiftly disciplined by the authorities and the media. it's not surprising we have a society littered with unsocialised and aggressive humans. although they would seem to demand respect and good manners from the rest of us.

I agree with the comments. Its an ongoing problem in Dawlish and no doubt every other town and city throughout the country. The Noise that these young kids create during the early hours of the morning is disgraceful, they don't care about anyone but themselves, the parents don't care. Wouldn't a responsible parent wonder where their offspring are and what they are doing late at night and during the early morning hours... Out walking my dog late at night one has a feeling of being unsafe, does anyone else have that feeling? I would be in favour of a curfew for under 18-year-olds, however, it could never be enforced as all the police force are tucked up in their beds.   Just one last thought I think the parents of the kid should be fined if caught.

These kids are not stupid they know that the PCSO'S finish at 2300 and then it will take 20 to 30 minutes for a  Police patrol to arrive if someone phones in there unruly behaviour and then all they do is scatter wait until the Police leave then carry on where they left off.  To them its just a game that they always win and the town centre residents have to put up with lack of sleep weekend after weekend i personally pray for adverse weather heavy rain always keeps them away.
