The new South Devon Highway officially opened for business at 3.30 this morning, just in time for Christmas!

In the wee small hours of this morning a convoy of cars with highways maintenance, police and engineers opened the road to its first traffic, with lucky drivers heading towards Newton Abbot at 3.30 am making South Devon history. The Newton Abbot to Torquay lanes were opened by 4.30am.

I travelled on it to and from Torquay last night and was very impressed with how well the traffic lights at the Torquay end work to feed the traffic through and going over the top of Penn Inn was great.  The whole thing ran very smoothly and it was a much quicker journey than the old route.  A huge well done to all the civil engineers and construction workers for a job well done and delivered early.

No hard shoulders from what I can see, so the first time their is a conked out vehicle or large crash how will the emergency services get to it. The other side of the road I suppose! Poorly thought out for plans going back over half a century for traffic volumes that were never envisaged in the future. A little to late in my opinion.
