Are we saying that someone on £53 per week gets no benefits?

Why can't they get JSA, HB, Council Tax Benefit (or whatever it's called now) etc.?

Someone seems to have failed this caller to the radio station - if not then s/he is not living on £53 a week.

Instead of bloody silly petitions (obviously IDS cannot live on £53 a week in the UK) someone needs to step in to help this individual.

It seems the person in question is working but still needing to claim benefits. (So he's not alone there then). Once all his essential living costs have been deducted he is left with £53 a week to live on. Here is The Telegraph report. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/politics/9964767/Iain-Duncan-Smith-I-could-live-on-53-per-week.html

Council Tax benefit (who is expected to pay and how much) I believe now varies from local authority to local authority. Some people who have not had to pay before and who are benefit claimants will now be paying a % of CT.

HB - goes towards the rent.

JSA - here are some details https://www.gov.uk/jobseekers-allowance/what-youll-get

When you say "obviously IDS cannot live on £53 per week" do you mean that IDS in particular cannot or that none of us can? And can I just point out that IDS himself said that he could. Therefore the petition is calling for him to do so. Nothing bloody silly about that at all.

If you get £71 per week and live on your own that is for all your living expenses , if you fall foul of the bedroom tax that % will be taken from this amount also your share of council tax. Teignbridge have not done that this year but many authorities have. Out of all thats left after that it most probably is for some people £53 to pay utilities, food etc. I have seen many people posting on various fb pages what they are left with, and this is disabled, long term sick etc not just unemployed what they will be left with, and it does not make good reading
