There is an alarming rate still, of businesses going bust.
It is reported on the Beeb today, that that figure is 100 per day.
I can't do nothing about it from my padded cell, but many of you out there can.

you nly have to look around the town at empty premises, and its nothing to do with any supermarket. by the time tescos or sainsburys come here the town will have died

Given the high rents and business rates etc..who in their right mind would open a shop in Dawlish knowing people long for failure and everything is available online cheaper plus delivered to your door!

yes i would, if i had a commoddity to sell that is needed in the town. charity shops and estate agents is what has caused dawlishs demise, there is nothing to bring people into town

Why did the shops become available in the first place? .. to allow for Charity Shops, only 4 isnt there? .. Barclays Bank and HSBC gave up on Dawlish. I think Woolworths would make a good indoor market, though suppose would only get trade in sunmmer, its the same old story.

According the to the Gazette the co-op are looking to buy the Woolworth's store so that they can expand and make their supermarket larger.

It's a shame, but by the end of the summer I think we will see many more businesses in Dawlish going under. I had a shop in the town for a couple of years and my problem was getting the locals in. None of the businesses in town can purly rely on the 6 weeks in the summer to see them through the whole year. I think a combination of the current economic climate, the poor weather keeping visitors away and,( this has to be said!),the alarming lack of support given to local business by the people of Dawlish. The only time locals came into my shop was when I was having a closing down sale and everything was half price. So I say to the people of Dawlish, if you want to keep shops in your town start using them because the way things are at the moment many wont be here this time next year.

Well said Verb.. also the other time locals only call in is for the rattling of the tin and for a raffle prizes, I got so fed up with it, I once boldly said.. (it was at end of the lease) .. 'you cant possibly want anything I have in here as only the holiday people buy!'

at one time the strand was thriving with a diverse selection of shops which were all busy with local people. fosters for the men and boys hockins for the ladies, plus several others no doubt people will have memories of. we as a family rarely went out of the town, so why and when did it all go wrong. i try to do as much as i can in dawlish but invariably end up going to teignmouth or newton abbot

Everyone seems to think the grass is greener by going elsewhere, I am sure Sainsburys expect business to be from Starcroos - Exeter area, people in Dawlish wont like 'em for some reason.. and its not even built yet lol.

Apologies. We updated the site last night and had a few technical problems which are hopefully sorted out now. The post was: It's all about personal choice though - Emotions in Dawlish for me is a great card shop which puts anything in Teignmouth to shame. By Bardwell.

To put this in context it was a response to a poster who reckoned to be able to buy better in Teighnmouth for many items - including cards. Emotions (I reckon) in Dawlish is probably as good as you'll find in the West Country, and good for them!
